Background Information

The key goal of the Year is to strengthen respect for cultural diversity and the coexistence of different cultural identities and beliefs.  In addition, the year aims to highlight the contribution of different cultures to the Member States' heritage and way of life and to recognise that culture and intercultural dialogue are essential for learning to live together in harmony.  The UK has been addressing the challenges of intercultural diversity for many years and has much to share with the rest of Europe – as well as much to learn from the experiences and examples of others.  Activities and initiatives in the UK have highlighted the diversity of our different cultures, of black and minority ethnic groups, of migrant communities, of people with different social and education backgrounds, as well as the richness arising from the breadth of languages used in our communities for communication and expression.

The Year in the UK will focus both on highlighting our progress and ongoing commitment in this area and sharing this with other European citizens and communities.

The 'Inter' website aims to provide a platform for examples of good practice and for greater sharing and communication both within the UK and across Europe.

More information will be made available about how your activities can be included on this website, and other ways in which you can benefit from this resource.
